Crochet Socks Workshop
February 17th
10am-3pm

£50 per person

These cosy socks are perfect for snuggling on the sofa as you crochet your next project! You can also wear them with roomy boots or wellies for a fun Spring look.

In this workshop we will cover a range of new skills and techniques including:

Following a pattern
Translating US crochet terms to UK terms
Working in the round
Crafting sock heels and toes
Adjusting a pattern to fit as you work.
New stitches such as front and back post stitches, half treble crochet, shell stitch, crochet increases and crochet decreases.

We have permission from the talented Clarissa Paige Dove to use her “Free Spirit” slipper pattern and a full-colour copy of the pattern (rrp. £3.25) will be provided to every participant. The pattern will be fully annotated by Fiona with hints, tips and adjustments to guide you through every step of the process. The pattern gives instructions for 3 sizes (S/M/L) and we will discuss how to adjust the pattern for further sizes and your preferred length.

In this workshop we will work on the first sock and you will work on the second sock at home. The workshop is supported by an active Facebook group, where you can post your progress, seek help and ask questions after the class is over.

You will need to bring:

— 4mm and 5mm crochet hook and your preferred aran yarn. A wool mix gives a cosier sock than 100% acrylic yarn.

The pictured socks (size L, UK 7) use 5 colours of wool-acrylic mix aran weight yarn (20% wool, 80% acrylic) in approximately the following amounts: 100g of grey and white and 50g each of yellow, blue, and pink.

Potential yarns could include:
Knitcraft aran (available from Hobbycraft) and Bergere De France Sport aran (available from Wool for Ewe, Rosemount). The pictured socks used Aldi So Crafty aran yarn in cream and grey, with the smaller volumes of colour coming from a cut and re-rolled Aldi multi-colour aran yarn cake. It is best that all your yarn has the same fibre proportions (e.g. all 20% wool) even if it doesn’t all come from the same brand, so it all works up with the same tension and flexibility.
