Women's Open Mic is back again! This is an open mic for for female acts. Come along and give it a go! This is again in the un-amplified, quiet and cosy venue of The Cult of Coffee to encourage an inclusive and supportive atmosphere, as well as the enjoyment of fantastic cakes, coffee and teas! Those with less or no experience performing are encouraged to get up and give it a go! Trans women are very welcome to perform.

I am very pleased to introduce two featured performers for this time, both of whom will be doing an extended spot of 15 minutes for you lucky audience! They are Jo Gilbert Writer, local poet who has regularly performed at previous Women's Open Mics and never fails to delight and entertain, and Marta NoOne (Silent Chaos) who will be bringing an entirely new flavour to the evening with her electronic sound creations.

As I've said before, I am a shy donation tin mistress, but to help cover costs it is necessary for me to pass it round. Donation basis, so pay what you feel you can!

All styles of performance are welcome, including but not limited to music, spoken word, and dance. The evening is half sign ups in advance, and half sign ups on the night, but anyone who gets in touch or signs up performs, there is no vetoing process (apart from the fact that you need to be female) as long as the list isn't full! Please get in touch via the event page, at Rebecca Dunn or email [email protected] if you'd like to perform.

The joyous and inclusive atmosphere of these events has to be felt to understand. Come along one and all. The event is open doors and all are welcome to attend. You can drop in and out as you please. Child-friendly too! (Performers have been exceedingly good at either omitting swear words, or giving fair warning so families can step out if they wish. Also, we often have performers of all ages, so do not let your age stop you if you wish to perform, young or older!)

Disabled access: the venue is accessible for wheelchairs. One would need someone (or staff) to open the double doors to get in and there is a fully accessible disabled toilet too and plenty of spaces for wheelchairs.

A bit of background on the event:
For me this event is about redressing the balance by encouraging more women in music and arts to put themselves out there. It's my hope that this event will play a part in encouraging women to to feel confident enough to take part in more open mics, and music and performance events.

This idea started last year as I spoke with friends and colleagues in Aberdeen who agreed that, while Aberdeen is thriving in terms of music, open mics and music nights in Aberdeen are pretty male dominated. I could see that this has the unintended effect of actually making female performers feel excluded and less confident to try out their skills in public. I wanted to see more female artists feeling confident to get up and perform.

See you there loves! ♥
